Discovering Exuma, the Swimming Pigs and Grand Bahama

The Bahamas has over 700 islands. The capital Nassau, is located on the island of New Providence.  The country is famous for plenty of water activities, with crystal clear blue waters, perfect for swimming, diving, and relaxing.

On our first trip to The Bahamas we first visited Exuma.

Exuma or Exumas are an archipelago, made up of more than 365 islands and islets.  Divided into 3 main areas: “Great Exuma”, “Little Exuma” and “The Exuma Cays”.

What to do in Exuma?

We had the unique experience of swimming with the pigs on of the Exuma Cays: We set up a tour with Exuma Water Sports a representative of the company, picked us up at our hotel, and drove us to the place where their boats and jet skis are located.

When you get close to the beach, the pigs are already waiting to be fed and to play with the visitors.  They know people are bringing them treats. The pigs, though feral, are exceptionally friendly. They live freely on the beach.

After spending some time with the pigs, the captain took us to the Iguana Beach.

It is an island inhabited by many iguanas.  This tour was very interesting, as the iguanas interact and are not afraid of humans, and they love to eat grapes.

Check out the restaurant Chat n’ Chill Bar:

In order to get there, you need to take a water taxi,  the ride takes 10 minutes from downtown. This bar is located on a small island where there is typical Bahamian food and drinks.   Here you can also feed stingrays.

Exuma is a very small Island chain, around which you can do many things in a few days.  We recommend you to do all the water sports, and boat trips on the first day.  Then relax and enjoy the beach, or your hotel’s pool.
