Adventures in the sand dunes: Lençois Maranhenses, Brazil

Lençóis Maranhenses is a rare geological formation with sand dunes that reach 40 meters high, the fresh blue, green water is collected by the rain.  It  looks like a desert, but it is not one. There is  water, therefore is not considered a desert.

Where is Lençóis Maranhenses located ?

Lençóis Maranhenses National Park is located in Barreirinhas a municipality in the state of Maranhão in the Northeast region of Brazil.

When we were in Barreirinhas , we stayed at a hotel, which arranged the trip for us to the Park. We woke up very early, ate our breakfast and they picked us up and more people to start the tour.  The bus stopped at the Preguiça River, where we took a boat to reach the other side.  Then they drove over an hour by Jeep 4X4, to get to the park.

Arriving at the park

When we arrived at the park,  we were introduced to the guide.   We walked all day long, visiting all the lagoons, the biggest lagoons are Azul and Bonita (Blue lagoon and Beautiful lagoon).  We stopped to go swimming and relax in the water. At the end we climbed the sands and it was one of the most beautiful things we’ve seen in our life: A desert with a lagoon in the middle, and the sun setting in the background.   By the evening we returned to Barreirinhas.
