A quick guide to Montevideo & Punta Del Leste, Uruguay 

Montevideo is the capital of Uruguay.  It has a population 1.5 million people, and is not too big compared to other capitals of South America. One of the best places  to stay are Pocitos or Punta Carretas they are the two most charming neighborhoods of the city.

What to do in Montevideo?

Start the day walking along the River Waterfront in Punta Carretas.

Walk around  Downtown. This area is very nice, there are beautiful monuments on Plaza Independencia.

Visit Teatro Solís, the country leading performance center.  It opened in 1856 and is a pride for the Uruguayan people. There are guided tours from Tuesday to Sunday (Wednesdays are free).

Have lunch at  Mercado del Puerto: Here there are typical foods arts and crafts.

How to get to Punta del Leste?

To get to Punta del Leste,  you can go by car os bus from Montevideo.  You can buy the tickets at the bus Terminal.

The bus departs and arrives every half hour,  the journey takes 2 hours and 15 minutes.

What to see in Punta del Leste?

When you get off the bus, walk 5-10 minutes you will see the Brava Beach and the famous Lo Afogado, also known as La Mano (The Hand).  It is the most coveted tourist spot of Punta del Este.  

Visit the Marina, which is full of luxury boats.  Also you can take a tour to see beautiful houses, in the neighborhoods of Beverly Hills and San Rafael.

Another choice, if you have limited time in Punta del Este, is the City tour, which allows you to see the city and its main sights in the right amount of time. The tour passes through the port, the Monument Lo Afogado, the Playas Brava and Mansa, and also the luxurious neighborhoods of Punta del East-as San Rafael and Beverly Hills – La Salina, and also for La Barra.

Don’t miss  Club hotel Casa Pueblo  It is actually in Punta Ballena, 16 km from Punta del Este, and today serves as a home, hotel, coffee shop, art gallery if you have time you should go there.

If you can not stay the night, after  visiting these sights, return to the terminal and catch the bus back to Montevideo.

Best time to visit Punta del Leste: May to july to visit the beaches of the coast, consider going between October and beginning of December, if you want to party December to February is the best time is more expensive and crowed. July – September are the coldest months of the year.
